winter semester 2017

Today we want to say thank you to Torben Carstensen. For 4 years he has put his heart and soul into the LUHbots and guided them successful through the competitions. Now, at the end of his master’s studies he places the team in the hands of Leonard Eberding (many of you will know him already). We’re looking forward to the years to come under new guidance. Thank you very much Torben, we wish you the very best!

Today was our team kick-off for the upcoming season. We are truly amazed about the number of people showing interest in our team. It was an incredible evening!! Thanks to everyone who joined us today!

Attention Everybody!!
As every year we’re searching for new team members. If you’re interested to join our team you’re very welcome to join us (only requirement: you study at the LUH). Just contact us by email or come to our open teammeetings every Tuesday at 4PM in the mobile robotics lab (“Labor für mobile Robotik”) in Appelstraße 11a.
Also, there will be a kick-off event on Tuesday, the 07th of November at 4PM in room A141, Appelstraße 11A for all of you interested in joining us. There, we (the old team members) will present our programs and the work done so far.
We’re looking forward to seeing YOU!!

…please tell everyone about it 😀

Today is an extraordinary teammeeting. We present the documentations of our packages and ROS-nodes and discuss the different possibilities to improve the real-time computations of our ROS-system.

Our youbot made it into the new advertisement video of the mechanical engineering faculty! We are very happy, that students of the LUH can not only accumulate knowledge in the field of robotics but can also work hands-on with robots in different sessions and offers from the university.

RoboCup 2017 – Japan

What a surprise! The last suitcase finally arrived at our doorstep! The robot arm had a little vacation on Rügen and only now found its way back into our lab, about a month after our journey to Japan.

The RoboCup 2017 in Nagoya, Japan is over!! We were able to secure the third place this year. Congratulations to the winning team AutonOHM and to team robOTTO for the second place! We would like to thank the organization of the RoboCup@work league for a great cup and the other teams for the exceptional friendly atmosphere.

The third competition day is over. Though the precision placement test usually counts to one of our strengths, we could not achieve any points for it today. Luckily we had a perfect BTT2 run, where we could show that our systems work very well together, if we don’t suffer any hardware related problems. We are the only team that achieved a perfect run in a transportation test in this competition and we are very happy about it. In the BTT3 we had to restart our run due to a lost object, since we otherwise would have faced a disqualification from the test. The remaining time did not suffice to gain a lot of points.

In total we accumulated 1454 points for our team today. Currently that puts us in third place.

Attached we show you todays BTT2 run. Tomorrow will be the grand final test at 1:30 pm (6:30 am UTC+1). As usual you can follow us live on twitch at . Come and cheer for us. 🙂

The second Competition Day is finally over. The day was dominated by an accident and hours of nerve-wracking repairs. During the first run of the day (BTT1) a camera crash stopped the robot in its’ track, leaving us with only 50 points for the whole run. Even worse, while testing to find the cause of the crash, the robot started moving uncontrollably and broke off camera and gripper by colliding with the arena. With both camera and gripper broken, we had no choice but to mount out replacements, which included a different and hopefully more stable camera. The new camera position is attached at a different position, therefore, all vision related modules had to be recalibrated. The next hours were spent integrating and testing the new parts. We knew that we would not be finished until the second run (BTT2), the league allowed us to postpone the run until tomorrow, giving us more time to prepare. Therefore, we shifted our attention to test the upcoming run (RTT) as much as we could. But as all our testing was done on the old camera we had to recalibrate the system on the fly in the last minutes before the competition. Sadly the conditions during the actual run were not like we expected, and the robot was not able to grasp the objects with the limited recalibration.
In conclusion, we hope that tomorrow will be free of new accidents and that our ongoing testing and calibration will enable us to recover and defend our third place in the competition.

Tomorrow it continues with PPT and BTT2/3
10:30 am (03:30 am UTC+1) → PPT (Precision Placement Test)
03:00 pm (08:00 am UTC+1) → BTT2 & BTT3 (Basic Transportation Test)

The first competition day is over!

Unfortunately, the camera crashed during the Basic Navigation Test, result is only 200 of 500 points. At the Basic Manipulation Test we were able to shine with a perfect run and a time bonus of 45 seconds (see the video). Until now we take the second place behind team AutonOHM.

It stays exciting!!!

Tomorrow it continues with BTT1, BTT2 and RTT.
10:30 am (03:30 am UTC+1) → BTT1 (Basic Transportation Test 1)
03:00 pm (08:00 am UTC+1) → BTT2 (Basic Transportation Test 2)
07:00 pm (12:00 am UTC+1) → RTT (Rotating Table Test)

The time is come!!! Today‘s the first day of the official competition.

10:30 am (03:30 am UTC+1) → BNT (Basic Navigation Test)
03:00 pm (08:00 am UTC+1) → BMT (Basic Manipulation Test)

RoboCup 2017 – Setup

We’re in the middle of our preparations, so far it’s looking good. 🙂

Thanks to Andrej, a lot of glue, and a bit of luck we were able to make the bot operational again. The arena is standing and already mapped and the first tests of BNT and BMT are already done. Of course there are still hurdles to overcome but we will give our best.

Successfully reached the exibition area of RoboCup 2017. But, the shock!!! OUR GRIPPER AND MOUNT BRACKET OF THE CAMERA ARE BROKEN. Now we have to improvise and use our best reparing skills.

Hope for the best and wish us luck. We will update you.

Preparing for RoboCup2017

It’s happening!! The last tests are done and the equipment is safely stored for the journey to Japan. The last couple of days were quite exhausting but now we’re well prepared for the Robocup in Japan. We’re super excited to meet the other teams from around the world and our motivation for this cup is as high as ever!
Here you can see some clips of our solutions for the Rotating Table Test and the Precision Placement Test.

After finishing up with the last changes to the gripper we now started testing in a proper siced arena. Here you can see a clip of the basic transportation test 1.
There is still a lot to do and optimize until Japan. Have a great week everyone!

Hey guys, it’s almost time for the next big challenge!! In about a month we’ll head out to Japan.
Are you as thrilled as we are?

Now it’s time for the last changes to the youbot so we can start testing in the next couple of days.

GermanOpen 2017

An exciting and chilling GermanOpen 2017 has ended. We are grateful to have been a part of it and to have had a chance to meet the other teams again. Especially our new members enjoyed the competition atmosphere and the exchange with the others teams.
We congratulate Team Autonohm from the University of Nürnberg for their outstanding performance and the 1st place. We also want to congratulate Team b-it-bots and Team robotto for the 2nd and 3rd place. We are humbled by our 4th place and recognize that it shows how strong the competition is this year and that they will punish every mistake we make. But we will work extra hard to show them at Robocup 2017 that we are still World Champions!
